After breaking several cooking spoons and spatulas within a few days, I urgently needed replacement now. And since I don’t have almost any cookware, that’s not non-stick coated, it must not be metal, but it also shouldn’t look like cheap plastic and also needn’t to cost a fortune. At the end I striked a bonaza – at least for the spatula – in the online shop of HEMA, a Dutch retail store chain.
Actually I opted for the spatula mainly because of the combination of decent gray plastic and natural wood. I simply love wood in the kitchen. Some kind of welcome “by-catch” are the soup ladle and the serving spoon.
In everyday life
For a total of £11, I didn’t really expect something great. But I’ve been using these kitchen aids for about three weeks now, actually almost daily. Especially the spatula. And from time to time I even “misuse” the serving spoon as a cooking spoon.
The workmanship of all HEMA kitchen helpers is outstanding and anything but typical of this price class. The wooden handles and the plastic parts are firmly connected. The plastic part is very stable, the wooden handles feel natural. All three items have a noticeable, but comfortable weight, so each sits very good in the hands – I personally like this kind of kitchen aids a bit heavier.
It seems that the wooden parts haven’t been further treated, in terms of a protective lacquer or similar. Yet I haven’t discovered any discoloration of the wood even so far. However, I haven’t used any of the kitchen aids with very color-intensive foods like tomato sauce.
Due to the wood, the parts are not suitable for the dishwasher of course. But actually that’s not a problem at all. Hitherto I could clean them very easily by hand by hand.
The only fly in the ointment? Unfortunately there’s no cooking spoon available from this series. At least I couldn’t find any, despite intensive search.
HEMA Kitchen Aids: Spatula, Serving Spoon & Soup Ladle
Combining natural wood and gray plastics makes these little helpers simple and elegant. And it’s also this combination that makes them a real eye-catcher.
I really love to cook with these items. They look not only great, but they’re also superbly manufactured, stable and sit incredibly well in the hands.
With 11 euros the price/performance-ratio is unbeatable. Finding something similar in design and quality at this price is likely impossible.
